Whether you’re a weekend rider, a daily commuter, or someone rediscovering the joy of cycling, one thing is certain—keeping your bike in good condition saves money, time, and stress. Just like a car, your bike gives off subtle warning signs before things go seriously wrong. Ignoring them can lead to breakdowns, expensive repairs, or worse—a dangerous ride.
At our bicycle workshop, we’ve seen it all—from rusty chains that snapped mid-ride to cracked tyres causing unexpected flats. The good news? Most problems can be caught early with just a bit of attention. In this article, we’ll walk you through five common bike issues you can spot early—and what to do about them.
1. Squeaky or Unresponsive Brakes
Your brakes are your most important safety feature. If they’re making strange noises, or your bike isn’t stopping as quickly as it used to, don’t wait.
What to look for:
- A high-pitched squeal when braking
- A grinding noise (this can mean the pads are worn through)
- Needing to pull the brake levers all the way back to stop
Why it matters:
Worn brake pads can damage your rims or rotors and seriously affect your stopping power. A quick pad replacement and brake tune-up now is far cheaper than replacing an entire braking system—or worse, dealing with an accident.
Pro Tip: Check your brake pads monthly, especially if you ride in wet conditions.
2. Gear Shifting Isn’t Smooth
If changing gears feels clunky or your chain skips when you pedal, your drivetrain might be trying to tell you something.
What to look for:
- Delays or hesitation when shifting
- Chain jumping between gears
- Clicking or clunking sounds during shifts
Why it matters:
Misaligned derailleurs or stretched cables are usually to blame—and are easy fixes if caught early. But if left alone, they can lead to worn-out gear teeth or a damaged chain, which will cost much more to replace.
Pro Tip: If you feel something off with your shifting, book a quick checkup. A drivetrain tune-up can prevent long-term damage.
3. Your Chain Looks Rusty or Dirty
A dirty chain isn’t just unpleasant—it’s one of the fastest ways to wear down your entire drivetrain.
What to look for:
- Chain looks reddish or brown with rust
- Black, thick buildup of grime on chain links
- A squeaky sound when pedaling
Why it matters:
A clean, well-lubricated chain lasts longer, runs smoother, and protects your cassette and chainring. Replacing a chain is a minor cost. Replacing an entire drivetrain? Not so much.
Pro Tip: Clean and lube your chain every 100–150 kilometers or more often in wet/muddy conditions. With chain lube less is more! Don’t over lubricate.
4. Wobbling Wheels or Loose Spokes
Do your wheels feel shaky when you ride, or do they make a ticking sound? You might have a loose spoke or an out-of-true wheel.
What to look for:
- A “wobble” in the wheel when it spins
- Clicking or pinging sounds from the spokes
- Uneven wear on brake pads or tyre
Why it matters:
Loose spokes can weaken your entire wheel structure. If ignored, the rim can bend, and in worst cases, collapse under weight. This is especially common in cargo bikes or bikes used for heavy commuting.
Pro Tip: Spin your wheels once a week and check for wobbles. Bring them in for truing if anything looks off—it’s a quick fix in most cases.
5. Low or Uneven Tyre Pressure
Tyres are your only point of contact with the road, so it’s crucial they’re in top shape. Under-inflated tyres wear out faster and make your ride sluggish.
What to look for:
- Tyres feel soft or look flat at the bottom
- You need to pump them often (a slow leak might be present)
- Uneven wear on tread
Why it matters:
Low pressure increases the risk of pinch flats, reduces control, and puts more strain on your rims. If a puncture is developing, it’s best to patch or replace before you’re stuck far from home.
Pro Tip: Check your tyres for tiny bits of glass & flint in the tread and tyre pressure weekly and top up to the PSI recommended on the sidewall. If you’re unsure, drop by—we’ll check it for free.
Bonus Tip: Trust Your Senses
Sometimes, you’ll feel something off that’s hard to describe—maybe your ride just doesn’t feel as smooth or responsive. Trust that instinct. Often, our customers come in saying, “Something feels weird,” and sure enough, we find an issue early enough to save them time and money.
Keep Your Ride Safe—and Save in the Long Run
At our workshop, we believe prevention is better than repair. Regular checkups not only extend the life of your bike, but they also keep your rides safe, smooth, and fun. And the best part? Catching problems early means fewer breakdowns and lower repair bills.
