How Often Should You Service Your Bike?

Your bike’s health isn’t just about how long it’s been since your last tune-up — it’s about how far you’ve ridden. Whether you’re commuting daily, riding on weekends, or just cycling occasionally, tracking your mileage is a smarter way to stay on top of maintenance.

Why Mileage Matters More Than Time

Many riders go by time-based schedules — every 6 or 12 months. But that doesn’t account for actual use. Let’s break it down:

  • Daily commuter (10–15 miles/day): That’s 200–300 miles/month, or 2,400–3,600 miles/year.
  • Weekend rider (120 miles/week): About 6,240 miles/year.
  • Casual urban rider (5 miles/week): Roughly 250 miles/year.

Clearly, one bike needs far more attention than the other, even if the calendar says the same.

A Simple Mileage-Based Maintenance Guide

Just like a car, bikes benefit from maintenance based on miles ridden. Here’s a general guide based on cumulative distance:

Every 100–200 miles:
  • Clean and lubricate your chain, especially after wet rides.
  • Check tyre pressure and look for tread wear.
  • Inspect for loose bolts or visible damage.

Every 500 miles:
  • Wipe down the frame and drivetrain.
  • Check brake pads for wear (cracks, thinning).
  • Inspect the chain for stretch.
  • Test gear shifting — roughness may mean cable or derailleur issues.
  • Lube pivots and cables; check for fraying or rust.

Every 2,000–3,000 miles:
  • Replace tyres if they show cracking or significant wear.
  • Inspect and service bearings in the hubs, bottom bracket, and headset.
  • Replace worn brake pads, grips or bar tape.
  • Check chain, cassette, and chainrings for wear.
  • Deep-clean the drivetrain(chain, chainrings, cassette, front and rear derailleurs) .

Every 5,000+ miles:
  • Fully inspect bearing systems and overhaul as needed.
  • Replace cables and housing if frayed or corroded.
  • Inspect frame and fork for cracks.
  • Check wheels carefully — look for worn rims or spoke holes.
  • Overhaul pedals and regrease bearings.

Your riding conditions also matter — wet, muddy terrain demands more frequent care than dry city roads.

Signs Your Bike Needs Attention

Even if you’re not tracking mileage closely, your bike will give you clues when it’s time for maintenance:

  • Squeaky or noisy chain
  • Gears skipping or shifting poorly
  • Brakes feel soft or take longer to stop
  • Wheels wobble or make noise
  • Unusual noises when pedalling

Don’t ignore these — early fixes prevent expensive repairs.

Keep a Simple Mileage Log

You don’t need fancy gear to track your bike’s mileage.  A small cycling computer, a smartphone app like Strava or Komoot, or even a notebook can help. If you tend to ride the same routes regularly, you can estimate your monthly total and base your service schedule on that.

We also recommend adding a simple sticker or tag to your bike showing the last service mileage. When you book with us, we’ll include one for free so you always know when your bike’s next check-up is due.

Regular Maintenance = Long-Term Savings

Skipping service might seem like a money-saver, but it often leads to bigger bills.  For example, replacing a worn chain early can prevent damage to your cassette and chainrings — parts that are much more expensive.

A well-maintained bike:

  • Runs more efficiently (smoother gear shifts, better braking)
  • Lasts longer (fewer part replacements)
  • Keeps you safer (especially in bad weather)
  • Helps preserve resale value

Think of it like dental care — routine cleanings are far cheaper (and less painful) than emergency root canals.
