Ride to Redhill Aerodrome via 4 churches and a windmill…

Want a spectacular ride that has scenic flats, country lanes, villages, epic descents and 10 hills?

Followed by one of Surrey’s more interesting coffee & cake stops? Here you have it!

Leaving Putney or Wimbledon we ride via Raynes Park to Epson where we find our first hill; chalk lane; hidden away and traffic free we emerge onto Epson race course, and an  undulating ride along side the famous race course we climb to Tadworth before descending to Chipstead. Another undulating ride before the meet the first ‘proper’ hill – a right turn to Hazelwood Lane. This twisty-turny climb takes you into the Surrey Hills proper.

We then meet your first church of note, followed by a lovely lane taking you down to the A23, which we follow for a short time before heading up another hill and another church. We follow the country lanes to Betchworth and your next church, and a noted war memorial ( if doing this route in November there’s a wonderful Remembrance Sunday service to pay your respects if you time it right).

We now follow various country lanes with bucolic views eventually arriving at Outwood Windmill on your left. An ideal selfie spot, if you like that sort of thing.

We turn right, past the oldest butchers in Surrey, another hidden away cycle cafe and one of our churches and head through some lovely lanes, soon you’ll see signs for Redhill Aerodrome, following these we arrive at Hanger 9 cafe where you can enjoy great coffee & cake while watching light aircraft and helicopters coming and going.

You’re at 50KM of a 80KM ride.

After filling yourself with energy giving cake we head home….

Bad news, a couple of KM after the cafe we have a steep ascent, with a dogleg thrown in, after this we find ourselves at Merstam where we turn right and  join the A23 again for a couple of KM, turning right up another hill  eventually making our way to to Farthing Down (via our last church of note) with spectacular views across the countryside and city of London.

We head through Coulsdon turning right at the MIdday Sun pub and make our last ascent of the ride  up to Woodmanston. From here we descend past the Lavender Fields cafe, Oaks Park Cafe and into the historic Carlshalton, passing the spring that feeds the River

Back in suburbia we follow the road through Rose Hill, Morden, Wimbledon to home.
